Wildlife and Culture

China is one of the countries with the greatest diversity of wildlife in the world. There are more than 4,400 species of vertebrates, more than 10 percent of the world's total. There are nearly 575 mammals, over 1,400 species of birds, more than 320 species of reptiles and 210 species of amphibians. China is also composed of 56 ethnic groups, of which 55 are recognized as minority. Panda habitats are found in narrow strips in central part of China surrounded by 6 provinces and 1 autonomous region. It is hard to understand the abundant biodiversity of panda habitats without taking a look at the provinces themselves. They all have an abundant wildlife and colorful ethnic culture due to unique locations and history. (You can click the map on the right to see a big map with information about this area.) This big area  possesses almost  all of the types of landforms, eco-environments and climate conditions found  in China. We are going to show you the unique resources in and around panda habitats in following way.

   

  Endangered Mammals

Though pandas fossils has been found as far as in Vietnam and Beijing, the human activities have driven this lovely black and white creature to fragmented habitats in the mountainous areas of Western China along with many other mammals. The mountains, plateaus and religious beliefs have provided a good shelter for mammals in China, especially those endangered ones.   Bird Resources

With a vast territory and a long distance extending from north to south, China has different landforms and various climate conditions, which provides ideal habitats for different species of birds living here.   Botanical Resources

The high mountains and high-elevation plateaus have reserved most parts of this area from access of outside world in ancient times. So little was known about the ethnic minority groups who live in the depth of mountains in western China. More than 90% of Chinese minority groups can be found here. Culture Resources

This area is the most fascinating place in China for its abundant culture resources. This area has made great contributions to the formation of two Chinese civilizations, namely the Yangtze River Civilization and Yellow River Civilization. The two most important rivers in China that has produced these two civilizations, the Yangtze River and Yellow River start from and flow through this area.The Yellow River Civilization is represented by Terrecotta Warriors while Yangtze River Civilization represented by Jinsha and Shanxingdui Site Museums. The world-famous sSlk Road go through this area. The mysterious Tibetan culture was born here. The ancient tea-horse trade routes are also in this area.
