As one of the largest countries in the world, China has a vast territory (about 10 million square kilometers), various climate conditions and diversified topographies going from the highest mountain peak Qomolangma (Everest) (29029 feet above the sea level) to Turpan Basin (508 feet below the sea level). All these have blessed China with one of the richest bird resources in the world. In total, there are 1408 species belonging to 429 genera, 101 families and 24 orders in China. China is known as the distribution center for pheasants with 62 species living in China. China has more than 36 different kinds of laughingthrushes, accounting for more than half of the world total. China also has large number of endemic birds such as Tibetan Babaxi, Tibetan Eared Pheasants, Rusty-necklaced Partridge, Sichuan Patridage, Tibetan Rosefinch, Snowy-cheeked Laughingthrush, Three-toed Parrotbill, Slaty Bunting, Sichuan Jay, Chinese Monal, White-speckled Laughing thrush, Yunnan Nuthatch, just to name a few.

With almost all kinds of landforms and different weather conditions in China, Panda habitats and neighoring provinces have the most abundant bird resources in China.Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai and Gansu are regarded as the most important birding spots in China. Sichuan has largest number of endemic birds in China with 228 endemic bird species while Yunnan has largest number of birds in China. Almost all year round, we can find good birding spots in this area, no matter for resident birds or for migratory birds. Hengduan Mountain in China has been listed by Conservation International as one of top ten places for biodiversity in the world.This area almost covers all the section of Hengduan Mountain in China.
