Endangered Mammals

China is a vast country with different climate conditions ranging from frigid temperate zone, temperate, warm temperate, subtropical to tropical zone and almost all kinds of land forms in the world including the largest desert and the highest plateau in the world. They provide different habitats for various mammals. Located between Palaearctic realm and Oriental Realm for animals, China has mammals from both realms. So China has extremely abundant mammal species, especially endemic ones. Of the 5416 mammal species in the world, China has 575 species, accounting for more than 10% of the world total. Moreover, about 18% of mammal species in China are endemic to this country.

Mammals in Panda Habitats and Nearby Provinces

This region has probably the most abundant mammals in China, due to the following reasons: 1. Located in the transitional area from low elevation area to high elevation area, this part has almost all kinds of landforms which serve as different habitats for different animals. 2. This area is sparsely populated and high mountains have separated this area into many small parts where animals can live with minimum human impact. 3. The religion belief has in reality protected animals in this area. 4. The vast unclaimed land in this area has provided sufficient food resources for different animals.
